Apparently the US is not the only place where people go crazy for the latest gadgets. A few days ago, a 14 year old boy from India confessed to killing his friend’s sister because he had to have her iPod. The boy, Arka Das loved gadgets so much that he had been caught stealing the cell phones of his neighbors numerous times, though they always let him go because he was so young. Perhaps they should have opted for turning him in and maybe he wouldn’t have ended up killing anyone.
Arka’s original plan was not to kill anyone. Originally, he went to the gadget repair shop where his friend, Sagar had taken her iPod to be repaired. When he was unable to attain the iPod using a forged note, the boy opted for plan B. He called his friend’s house and made plans to meet up with the boys little sister, Siuli. He told the girl that he would take pictures of her on the iPod, so she brought it and they traveled to a spot by the Mayurakshi dam.
When he was unable to take the iPod from the girl (he tried to snatch it from her), he hit the 10 year old girl in the face and threw her down a canal embankment that was 40 feet deep. Finding the girl unconscious, but alive, Arka gagged her, stoned her, and hid her body behind a hedge. When all was said and done he cycled home like nothing had happened.
Before the end of the evening, Arka had admitted what he had done all in the name of an iPod.
