Five Facts Meme: 5 Things You Don’t Know About Me

Written By: Ashtyn

November 16, 2008

So, Dominick Evans tagged me in a meme that has the tagged individual listing five things about themselves that might not be known. Once you’ve linked to the person that tagged you and list your facts, you tag six more people and hope the train continues.

I confess, originally I wasn’t planning to do this because I’ve been so busy that I haven’t had time. Of course, if Dominick can do it and someone as busy as Chris Brogan can do it, then I can find a few minutes to get it done, too. Rather than list friends (I need to network more, since most of my friends don’t blog) I am opting for people that have made a good impression on Twitter or people that inspire me. The list should be interesting.

So let’s get moving with the 5 Things You Probably Don’t Know About Me.

1. I have a serious need and compulsion to prove people wrong. The first Thanksgiving Dominick and I spent together he didn’t eat anything. I swear I don’t know how he lived. I was going to his house to cook so I gave him a list of things to buy for when I arrived. I was staying a week, so he got the Thanksgiving things and some other meals. I told him to buy Turkey…he didn’t eat that. I said Steak, nope didn’t really eat steak either. This went on for a few minutes until I developed the rule that he had to try one bite of whatever I made (I like to think I’m a bang up cook) and if he didn’t like it he didn’t have to eat it. Needless to say, when all was said and done I don’t think he went through the Freshman 15 as much as he did the Ashtyn (taught me how to eat) 20. You can replace the food analogy with just about anything. When someone says they hate something or that I can’t do something, it sets my motor running to either understand (in the first place) or prove them wrong (in the second).

2. I absolutely hate movie remakes. If a movie is made in Black and White and you color it, I won’t watch it unless I absolutely have to for review purposes. If a classic is remade, I will not only not watch it, I will cry if I have to. Usually I will pass the review off on someone else. Things like Miracle on 34th Street that are remade just drive me up the wall. In almost every case, I have made sure to purposely not watch the remake. The whole Psycho thing irked me, too. I wish Hollywood would get a clue. Perfection cannot be remade or colored to make more pretty. Leave well enough alone.

3. I’m in School to Become a Sex Therapist. This may or may not be known (I don’t remember if I put it in my bio). The interesting thing that people won’t know is that I don’t agree with half of what I read in my Psych textbooks. Not only that, but I fear for the Psychological community if half the people I go to school with get degrees. If I go by everything that I learn in school, everything (I mean everything) is your parent’s fault. You don’t even need therapy. Just blame them and you should feel better. Well, blame them and then move on. Problem solved. Boy, you’d think that we would progress some over the years. Apparently in this area we aren’t. I have a feeling I’m going to be really successful in this area, or labeled a quack and end up going belly up within a year. I can’t wait to find out which.

4. I’m Writing My Book for Me. The series that I am writing about vampires has changed a lot over the years. The first book has been written twice and is going through the third writing. I could have had it published, but I waited because I felt it wasn’t right. Even if it never gets published I will feel a huge accomplishment once I am happy with it and the final page has been written. The characters are a part of me and I love what I have created. I think there would a ton of better books and writers out there if everyone loved what they did more than the notoriety that sometimes comes with the job. When it comes to me, I would rather my book by perfect in my eyes than to feel it mediocre, but popular.

5. I Believe that Family is What you Make of it. If we’re going by biologically based family the only people in my family I speak to are my mother, brother, nephew, and son. I haven’t spoken to my father since I kicked him out of my life when I was about three years old (I just recently found out he died). I don’t speak to my aunts on my mom’s side or anyone (including my half-sister) on my dad’s side. While there isn’t anything I wouldn’t do for the ones that I do talk to, I think there is much more to family than a blood connection. At the end of the day the people in my family are just people. I have some great friends that I love and would do more for than some of my blood relatives and I don’t think there is anything wrong with that. Sometimes it’s better for a person to build their own family and focus less on the biological connections that were forced upon them.

Okay that’s me in short form. I am sure I will come up with more things you don’t know about me and eventually maybe I will fill another one of these out if I’m tagged again in the future. It was more fun than I thought it would be.

I’m tagging the following people:

@garyvee: I am not sure that I expect Gary to do this (live to dream, right), but his blog is seriously entertaining (he’s a charismatic guy) and I have learned tons from reading it and following him on Twitter. Check out His Blog as it’s highly recommended.

@Jimconnolly: I tagged Jim because I follow him on Twitter and he seems like a genuinely nice guy. His Blog is also a good read and worth checking out if you’re looking for marketing information.

@wilw: I wouldn’t normally tag a celebrity, but I think if anyone would do it Wil Wheaton would. His Blog offers plenty of information on things geek, current events, and his view on life. It’s one of the few blogs that are written with style by a celebrity.

@AmberCadabra: I know Amber from Twitter and though we don’t talk often, I am always reading her updates. Altitude Branding is a great blog and Amber is an engaging writer in her field.

@jerseymomma: Jersey Momma’s Blog is well written and has some great stories. The post about how she peed away her laptop (you have to read it to believe it) made me a regular reader, so I thought it important to pass on the link love.

@eMom: When I first signed up to Twitter one of the first people I began following was Wendy (eMom). During the election her updates were incredible and all of the pics from the rallies and Grant Park were excellent to see. Her blog, Sparkplug CEO is written by some great people and there’s plenty of information to help improve your business!
