Five Facts Meme: 5 Things You Don’t Know About Me

Written By: Ashtyn

November 16, 2008

So, Dominick Evans tagged me in a meme that has the tagged individual listing five things about themselves that might not be known. Once you’ve linked to the person that tagged you and list your facts, you tag six more people and hope the train continues.

I confess, originally I wasn’t planning to do this because I’ve been so busy that I haven’t had time. Of course, if Dominick can do it and someone as busy as Chris Brogan can do it, then I can find a few minutes to get it done, too. Rather than list friends (I need to network more, since most of my friends don’t blog) I am opting for people that have made a good impression on Twitter or people that inspire me. The list should be interesting.

So let’s get moving with the 5 Things You Probably Don’t Know About Me.

1. I have a serious need and compulsion to prove people wrong. The first Thanksgiving Dominick and I spent together he didn’t eat anything. I swear I don’t know how he lived. I was going to his house to cook so I gave him a list of things to buy for when I arrived. I was staying a week, so he got the Thanksgiving things and some other meals. I told him to buy Turkey…he didn’t eat that. I said Steak, nope didn’t really eat steak either. This went on for a few minutes until I developed the rule that he had to try one bite of whatever I made (I like to think I’m a bang up cook) and if he didn’t like it he didn’t have to eat it. Needless to say, when all was said and done I don’t think he went through the Freshman 15 as much as he did the Ashtyn (taught me how to eat) 20. You can replace the food analogy with just about anything. When someone says they hate something or that I can’t do something, it sets my motor running to either understand (in the first place) or prove them wrong (in the second).

2. I absolutely hate movie remakes. If a movie is made in Black and White and you color it, I won’t watch it unless I absolutely have to for review purposes. If a classic is remade, I will not only not watch it, I will cry if I have to. Usually I will pass the review off on someone else. Things like Miracle on 34th Street that are remade just drive me up the wall. In almost every case, I have made sure to purposely not watch the remake. The whole Psycho thing irked me, too. I wish Hollywood would get a clue. Perfection cannot be remade or colored to make more pretty. Leave well enough alone.

3. I’m in School to Become a Sex Therapist. This may or may not be known (I don’t remember if I put it in my bio). The interesting thing that people won’t know is that I don’t agree with half of what I read in my Psych textbooks. Not only that, but I fear for the Psychological community if half the people I go to school with get degrees. If I go by everything that I learn in school, everything (I mean everything) is your parent’s fault. You don’t even need therapy. Just blame them and you should feel better. Well, blame them and then move on. Problem solved. Boy, you’d think that we would progress some over the years. Apparently in this area we aren’t. I have a feeling I’m going to be really successful in this area, or labeled a quack and end up going belly up within a year. I can’t wait to find out which.

I couldn’t stop laughing at this when I saw this. I don’t know if it’s because of the hilarious realism concerning the subject matter or what, but if you haven’t seen this you need to check it out!

My Day With Dell Customer Service

Written By: Ashtyn

August 21, 2008

I had the worst customer service experience in recent years on the phone today. This was surprising because it was with a company that I spend a lot of money at, every year. It’s safe to say that I am a frequent customer of Dell. Last Christmas, I purchased 2 XPS desktop systems and received two $150 gift cards, as a result.

On August 3, I made two purchases. One was for a Studio Laptop and the other was for an mp3 player and a PS3 video game. Both orders were purchased online with the gift cards.

The cards were entered and the $150 was removed per card. I put the remainder of the bill on my Dell charge. I received my bill, a week or so later, to learn that the gift card money had not been deducted for these charges, despite the Dell website claiming that the gift card money was removed.

I called to handle the issue and spoke to 5 people that transferred me, all of whom could not speak English well enough to understand me. The fifth person transferred me to another person, also a person that did not speak English and was incredibly rude. He blamed me for not realizing that you cannot use Dell gift cards and Dell credit cards in the same purchase. When I asked to speak to a supervisor, he rudely informed me that it wouldn’t make a difference because a supervisor would not change the rules for me. He ended up transferring me to another person that could not speak English, who was rude, and was unable to work her phone well enough so she ended up hanging up on me.

I called back to request a manager, which once I got to her, made her the ninth person I talked to in a single day. The manager was the most polite person I spoke to, but when it came to dealing with the issues I had, she put me in touch with someone from returns. That person (number 10) claimed that he could not take the charges from my account, but due to the fact that the computer was already malfunctioning he would offer a discount on the computer. He offered $120, which I declined. When I informed them that my Microsoft Office CD was stuck in the computer, the first response was that a CD like that isn’t that expensive (though Dell charges close to $400 for the one I have) and the next response, once that was pointed out, was that you can download the program, so as long as I have my activation number that CD should not matter.

At this point I was through. I informed the man on the phone that I wanted $150 off the laptop and both gift cards returned, since the money for them was never taken off anyway. He claimed that he was unable to offer the additional $30 so I have made plans to send the laptop back. After that he connected me with person eleven in order to get my gift cards back since they were never used.
