Random Writing: The Heroin Story

Written By: Ashtyn

November 18, 2008

I was a little clueless about what to write today. No topic really lit a fire under me like they often do. So, instead of forcing something I decided to dig up a story and do a little freewriting. This was meant to be a serial to post on the website, so if it gets a good response I will continue it. Currently, it has no title so we will just go with the one above: The Heroin Story.

——————————————————-

Silence filled the room. The only real sound was that of dripping water. It was annoying at first. The incessant drip, drip, drip, until you learned to get used to it that is. She had learned to get used to it. She was excellent at blocking out everything but the moment she was in. This moment was the moment she needed to think about. Not the past moments. Not the abortion, the incest, the jail time. No none of that, just this moment right here.

The heroin moment.

The lighter flickered to life as she sparked it with her thumb. It was easy enough to do. She thought briefly for a moment of the first time she had tried to spark a lighter and couldn’t do it. Her friends had laughed at her. It was funny that she couldn’t do something so simple. She learned though and she learned fast.

The spoon ran over the heat and the white powder began to bubble and melt. The emerald twinkle in her eye sparked, as she knew that she would be numb soon. No more thoughts for her. She didn’t need any, but what she didn’t know was that this time would be different.

She injected the heroin into the needle and wrapped the band around her arm to get a good view of the vein. She found it and slid the needle in. She did the countdown in her head.
5…4….3…2…1….Blast off.

Unfinished Story: Tap

Written By: Ashtyn

November 5, 2008

In order to get myself back in the writing mood I started going through my old writing folders. I rarely write short stories, but while free writing one day I came up with this. If it is finished it looks like it would work out for a short story. Otherwise, it might make a decent scene in a book with the right polishing.

Either way, here it is, as I said it was free writing, so no major editing was done. I’m just posting this to remind myself that I actually do write things occasionally and to get into the groove to begin working on future works.

Hope you like it!

Tap….tap….tap. The sound of a shoe pressing to the hardwood floor could be heard. Tap…tap…tap. He moved slowly, as if his steps were calculated. He seemed to know where he was going even before he had reached his destination.

“I know you’re in here. You can’t run from me. In fact, you’re only making this harder on yourself.”

There was no answer but that was okay in his mind. It wasn’t like he expected an answer. The thunder rolled and the lightening struck, which caused a light to cascade through the window centered above the hallway. As this occurred his eyes moved from left to right.

More than one door stood beside him. He could choose the left or the right. It would not matter much which was chosen though he highly doubted what he sought would be behind door number two. The reason he didn’t think the left door was occupied was because there was a deterrent waiting in that room. The deterrent, in this case, was a dead person. Of course, he saw it more like a work of art.

Organizing My Time

Written By: Ashtyn

October 28, 2008

I am awful when it comes to managing my time. I admit it. I have a million things I need to do every day and sometimes I just don’t know where to begin. The helpful inside voice I have reminds me to take things one at a time, but that can be difficult. So, throwing caution to the wind I am beginning to think that I need to begin following a schedule.

I hate schedules. I don’t know if it’s the writer in me or what, but I have always hated schedules. At one point, I refused to follow one because I don’t feel it’s possible to write just because it’s time to write. Creativity doesn’t really work that way. At least, I don’t find that it does.

Now I don’t really have much of a choice. I have numerous blogs (including this one) that need to be updated more regularly than they are. I am helping my brother start a blog and a friend to write a book about caring for her husband who has cancer. I have a school schedule that’s met on bare minimum only, people to take care of (an autistic son we homeschool and Dominick who is in a wheelchair), and a creative writing career that is waning because I don’t have time to write as much as I would like. So, something has to be done.

Tina Fey as Sarah Palin on SNL

Written By: Ashtyn

September 14, 2008

If you didn’t get a chance to see Tina Fey playing Sarah Palin last night you should check it out. While I am not a huge SNL watcher these days, I have to say Tina Fey coming back to play Palin was classic. She did an excellent job and the skit was completely hillarious!

Book Review: Stolen Innocence

Written By: Ashtyn

September 7, 2008

Stolen Innocence Book“When I was young, my mother taught me that evil flourishes when good men do nothing. This has not been easy for us. The easy thing would have been to do nothing. But I have followed my heart, and I have spoken the truth.”

-Elissa Wall, Author of Stolen Innocence

I don’t find the time to read as much as I should, and I openly admit that I read non-fiction even less. These days, I barely have time to watch my favorite television shows, so the idea of reading a book is nearly inconceivable. However, recently there was a book that came before me that I couldn’t put down. That book was Stolen Innocence by Elissa Wall.

Wall is best known for testifying in the Warren Jeffs trial. A former member of the FLDS (Fundamentalist Latter Day Saints), Wall was born and raised into a polygamist sect where she lived into her young adult life. Stolen Innocence is Wall’s story about being forced to marry her cousin, endure rape and incest (Alan was Elissa’s first cousin), and be torn apart from her family all because of Jeffs and a religion that Wall no longer associates with God.

Most Americans are familiar with polygamy based on what they see on HBO’s hit television show, Big Love. How much truth Big Love offers really depends on the type of polygamist you are. I believe that people can love more than one person at a time. I also believe that plural relationships can work in the right dynamic. That is not to say that I agree with plural marriages that allow 12 year old girls to marry 56 (or older) year old men.
